Ventrilo

Do we have vent? The in-game voice chat just doesn't cut it.

If not I could get a 10-man one only $36 for a year. I have been thinking of transferring back late-may/ early June.

I need to look into Vent, because last I heard, they weren't going to support the Mac client (for the new OS), so I'd not be able to use it. It was nice when it did work, though.

Nah, looks like it can.

From this thread http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html;jsessionid=CFDCB1976BE5268DED10A0A948E67422?topicId=81962486&sid=1

"It's fairly simple to do but you personally will not be able to do so. The Mac version of Ventrilo is very poorly written with support for only one codec, Speex. Your guild most likely is using the standard GSM. Have the administrator of your Ventrilo server switch codecs to Speex instead of GSM. Vent will run fine then.

On a side note, OSX is perfectly capable of understanding and using GSM codec but the producers of Vent have not ever written support in their program for it. Maybe one day they will realize Windows machines aren't the only computers out there."

I went ahead and reinstalled it earlier, so once I have a channel to experiment with, I'll see how it runs.

I really do wish they had some way to convert game money to real money, then it would be a piece of cake to make this a guild expense, instead of slapping it on one person to fund.

He did, but I don't think he's around that much lately.

The in-game voice chat is okay, I just wish when you didn't have it on non push-to-talk that it didn't echo back. It would make my life infinitely easier.

Vent has much better quality.

I found a free public vent at freevent.net, check it out and see if it works on a mac.
There was a channel with 10 ppl in it when I looked and I went to check it out for a few seconds and they were talking about wow.
I'm guessing the server pays for itself from the massive amount of ads on that site cyclops

Our current options:

1. http://freevent.net/ (free but public, don't know if it works on macs)
2. Speaking of macs, does ezmac have a vent?
3. http://www.typefrag.com/ ($36/yr)

It's been decided that we will be going with a Typefrag Ventrilo Server.
